Toning is something that groups of singers sometimes
do as a warm-up or a wind-down to their singing session.
They gather in a circle and one person will start
a note on a vowel sound and others in the group will
join in unison or in harmony. The group then keeps
the sound going as long as it wants with individual
singers varying the vowel sounds and harmonys. It
is a simple exercise in singing in community that
anyone can participate in whether or not they think
they can sing.
As a member of Victoria's 300 voice, non-audition
Gettin' Higher Choir
I can tell you with confidence that "all voices
can sing" and that singing in such a circle,
or standing in the middle of one, can be extraordinary
experiences. Most of our members, including myself,
were among the "musically wounded" who for
one reason or another were discouraged from singing
earlier in life. By singing in community with other
supportive, and non-jugemental singers, we have found
our voices.
If the winner of your game wants a toning circle please
set aside your hesitations and give it a try, you
have nothing to lose and the joy of singing to gain.
